ABERDEEN, WASHINGTON — Nirvana was an American rock band that helped define the grunge movement of the early 1990s. Formed in Aberdeen, Washington, in 1987, the band became one of the most influential acts of its era before ending following the death of frontman and primary songwriter Kurt Cobain in 1994.
The lineup most closely associated with Nirvana’s rise to international fame featured Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl.
Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl
Cobain was Nirvana’s lead vocalist, guitarist and principal songwriter. He and bassist Krist Novoselic were founding members and remained at the center of the band’s development from its early years in Washington’s underground music scene.
Novoselic played bass throughout Nirvana’s most successful period and helped shape the band’s distinctive sound alongside Cobain.
Dave Grohl joined Nirvana as drummer in 1990, replacing Chad Channing. His arrival completed the trio that recorded the band’s best-known albums, Nevermind in 1991 and In Utero in 1993.
Nevermind transformed Nirvana from a successful alternative rock act into an international phenomenon. Its breakthrough single “Smells Like Teen Spirit” became closely associated with the grunge movement and helped bring alternative rock into the mainstream.
Earlier Nirvana Members
Nirvana went through several musicians before settling on its best-known lineup.
Drummers Aaron Burckhard, Dale Crover, Dave Foster, Chad Channing and Dan Peters each spent periods with the band. Channing played on Nirvana’s 1989 debut album, Bleach. Peters, who was also associated with Mudhoney, briefly played drums for the band in 1990 and performed on the “Sliver” recording.
Jason Everman joined as guitarist in 1989. Although he was credited on Bleach, he did not play on the album’s recordings. He left after a relatively short period with the group.
By late 1993, Pat Smear, formerly of the punk band Germs, had joined Nirvana as a touring guitarist. He performed with the band during its final period.
Nirvana’s Legacy
Nirvana’s career ended in 1994 following Cobain’s death on April 5 of that year. The band’s influence continued long after its breakup, with Nevermind and In Utero remaining central works in the history of alternative and rock music.
Grohl later founded Foo Fighters, becoming its frontman and principal songwriter. Novoselic has continued working in music and other creative projects.
For most listeners, the defining Nirvana lineup remains Cobain, Novoselic and Grohl. Their brief period together produced the recordings that established Nirvana as one of the most recognizable bands of the 1990s.
