Mommenheim – A family in Alsace is in mourning following a devastating accident that claimed the lives of both a father and his young son during a community event in Mommenheim, north of Strasbourg.
The tragedy began on Sunday, August 24, when a 46-year-old man and his 13-year-old son set out for a short ride in a three-wheeled Vanderhall Venice roadster. The drive took place on a road temporarily closed to traffic as part of activities linked to a local solidarity gathering. Around 4 p.m., however, their vehicle veered off the designated route on Rue de Rome and collided violently with a tree.
Immediate Response
Emergency services arrived within minutes. Firefighters found that the driver, the boy’s father, had been thrown from the roadster due to the force of the impact. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
His son, who was seated as a passenger, was trapped inside the wreckage and required urgent extraction. Firefighters and paramedics managed to resuscitate the teenager before transporting him in critical condition to the CHU de Hautepierre in Strasbourg.
A Heartbreaking Outcome
According to the Strasbourg public prosecutor’s office, the 13-year-old—soon to celebrate his 14th birthday—succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday, August 27.
The accident has left the community shaken, particularly given the family nature of the event during which the outing took place. Local residents and organizers have expressed deep sadness, noting that what was meant to be a day of solidarity and enjoyment ended in tragedy.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities have opened an inquiry into the exact circumstances of the crash. While road closures and safety measures were in place for the event, investigators will assess how the powerful three-wheeled roadster lost control.
Community in Mourning
Mommenheim, a village where community ties run strong, has been left reeling from the double loss. Neighbors and attendees of the event have extended their condolences to the family.
This tragedy highlights the risks associated with high-powered recreational vehicles, even during organized gatherings intended to bring people together. For those who knew the father and son, the memory of their bond—and the abruptness of their loss—will weigh heavily in the days to come.
