Palma, Majorca – A section of the roof at Palma de Mallorca Airport partially collapsed after debris fell onto it, shattering glass panels and scattering shards across the arrivals and baggage reclaim area. The incident prompted airport officials to cordon off part of the terminal on Tuesday, according to the Majorca Daily Bulletin.
Authorities confirmed that no injuries occurred, although the loud noise of the collapse caused significant panic among passengers in the terminal.
The falling glass reportedly struck vending machines in the baggage reclaim zone, and arriving travelers had to be rerouted through alternative pathways in the airport while safety checks and cleanup were underway.
Spain’s airport authority AENA released a statement following the incident:
“Airport officials are assessing what happened in order to take appropriate measures and determine responsibility, if necessary.”
The collapse comes amid a wave of recent operational complaints at Palma Airport. Earlier this month, British tourists voiced frustration over long passport control queues, with some reporting that only two immigration desks were open at peak times. The latest incident adds further concern regarding infrastructure and staffing challenges at one of Spain’s busiest summer airports.
While airport operations continued with some rerouting, officials assured passengers that all necessary precautions were taken and that the structural issue was being actively investigated.
Travelers are advised to check with their airlines for any changes or delays and to follow guidance within the terminal while the affected area remains closed for inspection and repair.
