GoFundMe to Help Sam Sweeney, of Crystal Lake, Family, a Musician and Tennis Coach

Crystal Lake, Illinois – The Crystal Lake community is mourning the sudden loss of Sam Sweeney, a respected musician, tennis professional, and devoted family man who passed away unexpectedly on February 9.

Sweeney, of Crystal Lake, leaves behind his wife, Kellirose, and their two children, Noah, 7, and Lilly, 5. Family members described his passing as “tragic and immeasurable,” while emphasizing the enduring legacy he built through faith, mentorship, and service.

Known locally for his deep involvement in tennis, Sweeney coached varsity teams at Prairie Ridge High School and Crystal Lake Central High School. He also served as a Crystal Lake Park District instructor and club professional, earning respect for both his technical skill and encouragement of young athletes. Earlier in his career, he was inducted into the Hall of Fame at North Central College and earned ATP doubles ranking points—an achievement that underscored his competitive caliber.

“Sam didn’t just coach tennis—he mentored character,” said one former colleague. “He taught discipline, humility, and joy in the game.”

Friends recall his infectious humor and instinct to put others first. Beyond athletics and music, those closest to him say fatherhood was his proudest role.

A fundraiser established by family and friends aims to support Noah and Lilly’s education and future needs. Community members have responded with an outpouring of donations and tributes, reflecting the wide reach of Sweeney’s influence.

As Crystal Lake begins the long process of healing, many say Sweeney’s greatest legacy lives not in trophies or titles, but in the lives he strengthened—on the court and at home.
