The British equestrian community is in mourning after experienced rider Sarah Yorke, 37, died following a fall during the Aston-le-Walls Horse Trials in Northamptonshire on Friday.
Yorke suffered the fatal accident at the third fence of the course. Despite immediate attention from on-site medics, she could not be revived. Her horse, Mgh Hera, was examined by veterinarians and found unharmed, later returning safely to the stable.
British Eventing, the sport’s governing body, confirmed that all scheduled competitions on Saturday were cancelled as a mark of respect. Chief Executive Rosie Williams offered condolences on behalf of the organisation, saying the “thoughts of the entire eventing community” were with Yorke’s loved ones.
A spokesperson added that the tragedy was “a deeply difficult moment” for the sport and pledged a full review of the incident.
The Aston-le-Walls Horse Trials, a fixture in the UK eventing calendar, attracts riders from across the country. While serious accidents are rare, the sport carries inherent risks, with safety reviews and course design continually evolving to protect riders and horses.
