Authorities in Arizona have escalated the search for Nancy Guthrie, 84, the mother of Today show co-host Savannah Guthrie, after investigators discovered blood and signs of forced entry inside her Tucson home—developments that have transformed the case from a missing person inquiry into a criminal investigation.
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety and the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, Nancy Guthrie was last seen Saturday night at her residence. Concern grew Sunday afternoon when family members went to check on her after she failed to attend church, something officials described as highly unusual. Inside the home, they found her personal belongings—including her wallet, cellphone, and car—still present, but Nancy was gone.
Law enforcement sources say blood was discovered inside the residence, though it remains unclear whose blood it is. Investigators also noted signs of forced entry, raising fears that Guthrie may have been taken against her will, possibly during the night.
“At this point, investigators believe she was taken from the home against her will,” department spokesperson Kevin Adger said, confirming detectives are pursuing the case as a possible kidnapping or abduction.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos emphasized the urgency of the situation during a news conference Monday, noting that Nancy Guthrie has limited mobility and requires daily medication—without which her life could be in immediate danger.
“We do in fact have a crime scene; we do in fact have a crime,” Nanos said. “She did not leave on her own.”
In an emotional appeal, the sheriff directly addressed whoever may be responsible. “Just call us. Let her go,” he said. “The family will tell you, there’s no questions asked here.”
Authorities have launched a public tip line and are offering a reward of up to $2,500 for images, videos, or information leading to an arrest. Investigators are urging residents to report anything unusual, no matter how small it may seem.
The case has drawn national attention due to Savannah Guthrie’s prominence, though officials stressed there is currently no indication of a specific threat tied to her public profile. Savannah Guthrie has asked for privacy while urging the public to pray and assist.
