Vehicle Ramming and Shooting at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Michigan: Suspect Killed and Security Guard Injured

West Bloomfield, Michigan – Authorities are investigating a violent incident at Temple Israel after a suspect drove a vehicle into the synagogue’s entrance and opened fire, leaving one security guard injured before being killed during an exchange of gunfire.

The attack unfolded shortly after 12:30 p.m. local time in West Bloomfield Township, prompting a large response from local police, fire crews, and federal agents. Officials say the suspect rammed a vehicle through the building’s doors, striking a security guard who was stationed at the entrance.

According to Michael Bouchard, other armed security personnel quickly confronted the suspect and exchanged gunfire, resulting in the suspect’s death. The injured guard was taken for medical treatment and is expected to recover.

The vehicle involved in the crash later caught fire, sending thick smoke into the air and forcing emergency crews to evacuate the building. Staff members and children at a nearby daycare facility connected to the synagogue were safely removed from the premises.

Authorities also reported that approximately 30 responding law enforcement officers were treated for smoke inhalation during the emergency response.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is now leading a joint investigation, describing the event as a possible targeted attack against the Jewish community. Officials have not yet released the suspect’s identity or confirmed a motive.

Community leaders say the incident has shaken residents but also highlighted the importance of trained security measures at religious institutions, which may have prevented further casualties. Investigators continue searching the area as a precaution while examining the suspect’s background and the events leading up to the attack.
