An Indiana community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of 4-year-old Maverick Flinn and his great-grandmother, who died following a farming accident in Jackson County. The tragedy unfolded on Monday, June 23, 2025, in Redding Township when both were struck by a combine tractor.
According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, emergency responders were called to the scene at 7:40 p.m. They found Maverick and his 68-year-old great-grandmother critically injured. The young boy was rushed to a nearby medical center, where he was pronounced dead. His great-grandmother was airlifted to another hospital but passed away from her injuries on the morning of Wednesday, June 25.
Authorities confirmed that the accident involved a combine. The Jackson County Coroner’s office has not yet released additional details, and the incident remains under investigation.
Sheriff Rick Meyer expressed condolences in a statement: “Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to the family and all involved.”
Maverick’s uncle, Zach Flinn, told NBC affiliate WTHR that the little boy loved farming and was excited to ride in the combine with his great-grandfather that evening. As he exited the machine, both he and his grandmother were struck.
“It was in his blood,” Zach said of Maverick’s love for farming. “He was so energetic, so loving—he never met someone he didn’t want to give a hug to.”
Maverick’s obituary described him as a bright, joyful child who left an indelible mark on everyone he met. “God’s child had the brightest smile, a heart full of love, and gave the very best hugs,” the obituary read. “His time on earth was far too short, but the love he gave and received will remain forever.”
The community has rallied around the grieving family, raising more than $70,000 through GoFundMe—far surpassing the original goal of $5,000. Maverick’s loved ones plan to build a playground in his honor, ensuring that his spirit of joy and curiosity lives on.
