Victor Romero, 62, Faces Manslaughter Charge in Koran Irvine Shooting

NEW YORK, –  Victor Romero, a 62-year-old retired New York City police detective, faces a first-degree manslaughter charge in the fatal shooting of Koran Irvine, a 46-year-old Con Edison employee from Valley Cottage, New York. The shooting occurred on the George Washington Bridge in an incident investigators believe may have stemmed from road rage.

The case has drawn attention because of Romero’s former law enforcement career and the circumstances surrounding Irvine’s death. Romero was initially charged with murder following his arrest on October 21. At his first court appearance the following day, prosecutors brought the manslaughter charge, and a judge set bail at $1 million.

What Happened on the George Washington Bridge?

According to prosecutors, the shooting occurred shortly before 7 p.m. on October 20, as the two drivers travelled along the bridge’s outbound upper level toward New Jersey.

Investigators reviewed surveillance footage as they worked to reconstruct the events leading up to the shooting. Prosecutors said the video showed Romero’s company-issued vehicle nearly colliding with Irvine’s car before allegedly following him closely across the bridge.

According to the criminal complaint, Romero then pulled alongside Irvine’s vehicle and fired a single shot. Irvine suffered a gunshot wound to the back of his right shoulder.

His vehicle subsequently crossed traffic lanes and struck the centre median. Emergency responders found him unconscious and unresponsive before transporting him to Englewood Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The allegations against Romero remain subject to the legal process.

Who Was Koran Irvine?

Irvine lived in Valley Cottage, in Rockland County, and worked for Con Edison, the New York-area energy company. Reports said he had recently marked approximately 20 years with the utility.

Con Edison expressed grief over his death, describing the shooting as a senseless act of violence and extending condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.

Neighbours also remembered Irvine as a helpful and generous member of the community. His death has left his wife, Patricia, and their two children facing a sudden and devastating loss.

GoFundMe Supports Irvine’s Family

A GoFundMe campaign was established to support Irvine’s loved ones following his death. The fundraiser describes him as a devoted husband and father whose humour, smile and enthusiasm for life brought happiness to those around him.

What Happens Next?

Romero is scheduled to return to court on October 27, according to News 12. The case continues as investigators and prosecutors examine the evidence surrounding the fatal encounter.

The case has renewed attention on the potentially devastating consequences of confrontations between drivers. For Irvine’s family, the immediate focus remains on grieving their loss and supporting his children as the legal proceedings continue.
