Kay Arthur, Renowned Bible Teacher and Precept Founder, Dies at 91in Chattanooga, TN

CHATTANOOGA, TN — Kay Arthur, the beloved Bible teacher, author, and co-founder of the international ministry Precept, died this week at the age of 91. Her passing marks the end of an extraordinary life devoted to Scripture, teaching, and helping others grow in their faith.

“She will be remembered for her love for the Lord, His Word, and His people,” the Chattanooga-based Precept ministry said in a statement. “A dynamic speaker with a warm writing style that captivated many, Kay was a remarkable beacon of grace and truth.”

Arthur was born on November 11, 1933, in Jackson, Michigan. Before her public ministry began, she worked as a registered nurse and endured early personal hardships, including a difficult divorce. Those challenges, she later said, prepared her for a life of deeper ministry and compassion: “All suffering has an end,” she often reminded others.

While studying at Tennessee Temple University, Kay met her husband, Jack Arthur. The couple served as missionaries in Mexico before settling in Chattanooga, where they co-founded Precept Ministries International. What began with Kay leading Bible studies in her home became a global movement. Her inductive Bible study method—teaching believers to observe, interpret, and apply Scripture—has now reached 190 countries and been translated into more than 110 languages.

Arthur authored over 100 Bible studies and books and was best known for hosting Precepts for Life from 1999 to 2019. Her work earned numerous accolades, including four Gold Medallion awards and induction into the National Religious Broadcasters Hall of Fame.

Christian leaders and teachers across generations have paid tribute to her lasting impact. “She is now at the feet of her Redeemer,” wrote Bible teacher Beth Moore. “Thank you, Kay. You were unmatched.”

Kay Arthur is survived by three sons, nine grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. Her husband, Jack, passed away in 2017 after 51 years of marriage.

In honor of her life and ministry, the Arthur family has asked that memorial donations be directed to the Kay Arthur Memorial Fund. Her legacy continues in the millions of lives shaped by her faithful teaching of God’s Word.
