Mia Hamant Died at 21: University of Washington Mourns Young Goalkeeper

Washington – The University of Washington is grieving the loss of Mia Hamant, a standout goalkeeper whose athleticism, leadership and courage made her one of the most admired student-athletes on campus. Hamant died Thursday at age 21 after a battle with Stage 4 kidney cancer, the university confirmed.

A native of Corte Madera, California, Hamant emerged as one of the Big Ten’s top goalkeepers during the 2024 season. Her 0.66 goals-against average ranks among the lowest in program history, helping the Huskies reach the conference tournament semifinals. But teammates say her impact far exceeded her performance on the field.

“Mia was the heart of our program,” head coach Nicole Van Dyke said in a university statement. “Her joy, courage and kindness lifted everyone around her. She inspired us every day, even in the hardest moments.”

Hamant was diagnosed in April and stepped away to begin chemotherapy, receiving widespread support across Washington athletics. In late October, she attended the Huskies’ football victory over Illinois, where wide receiver Denzel Boston dedicated his postgame remarks to her fight. Two weeks before her death, she sounded the pre-game siren at Husky Stadium — a moment many on campus now describe as symbolic of her strength.

Her story resonated across the Big Ten, which honored her with the 2025 Sportsmanship Award earlier this week, recognizing her resilience and influence beyond competition. Sports psychologists note that athletes battling life-altering illness often become rallying points for their teams, strengthening cohesion and community expression — a pattern reflected in the support Hamant received.

“Mia embodied everything we hope for in a Husky student-athlete,” athletic director Pat Chun said. “Her grace, perseverance and commitment to others will continue to inspire the UW family.”

Hamant is survived by her parents, who the university says were by her side throughout her final months. Her legacy — defined by determination, compassion and an unshakable spirit — continues to leave an imprint on teammates, coaches and fans who followed her journey with admiration.
