Phil Robertson, Patriarch of ‘Duck Dynasty,’ Succumb to Alzheimer, Dies at 79

Phil Robertson, the bearded patriarch who became a household name through A&E’s hit reality series Duck Dynasty, has died at the age of 79. His daughter-in-law, Korie Robertson, shared the news on social media on May 25, confirming that he passed away after a private battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Robertson’s diagnosis was first publicly acknowledged by his son Jase in December 2024 during an episode of the family’s podcast, Unashamed. While few additional details were shared in the months that followed, it had become clear to many fans that his declining health kept him increasingly out of the public eye.

Born in Louisiana, Phil Robertson was a former college quarterback, avid outdoorsman, and founder of Duck Commander, the family business that fueled the success of Duck Dynasty. When the show premiered in 2012, viewers were quickly drawn to the family’s deep Southern roots, unfiltered faith, and strong familial bonds. The program ran for 11 seasons before ending in 2017 but left a lasting cultural imprint.

“He lived exactly as he believed—unapologetically, faithfully, and with great love for his family,” Korie wrote in her tribute. “We’re heartbroken, but we rejoice in knowing he is finally whole and at peace.”

While Robertson’s influence extended beyond television—he often spoke publicly about his Christian faith and conservative views—his public life was not without controversy. In 2013, he was briefly suspended from Duck Dynasty following an interview with GQ magazine, during which he made remarks equating homosexuality to sin and bestiality. The backlash was swift, but so was the response from the show’s large fanbase. A&E reinstated him nine days later amid protests and vocal support from conservative groups.

Despite the controversy, Duck Dynasty continued to thrive until its conclusion. Since then, the Robertson family has remained in the public eye through podcasts, books, speaking engagements, and business ventures. A new spin-off series, Duck Dynasty: The Revival, is scheduled to premiere this summer. While Phil was not expected to appear due to his health, the show will focus on his son Willie and daughter-in-law Korie, along with their children, who have continued to lead the family’s operations and public presence.

Phil Robertson’s life and legacy extend far beyond reality TV. As the founder of Duck Commander, he turned a small duck call business into a multi-million dollar brand. As a father and grandfather, he anchored a tight-knit family that emphasized loyalty, faith, and resilience. And as a public figure, he sparked conversations that challenged, divided, and inspired.

Though the original show ended years ago, Duck Dynasty lives on—not just through reruns or spin-offs, but through the values and connections it showcased. For fans across the country, Phil represented a return to tradition, however polarizing that may have been at times.

He is survived by his wife, Kay Robertson, his sons—Alan, Jase, Willie, and Jep—and numerous grandchildren. The family has asked for privacy as they grieve, and they expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support from fans and friends.

In mourning the loss of Phil Robertson, many will also celebrate the life of a man who helped redefine what family, faith, and reality television could look like in America.
