PRIOR LAKE, Minn. — Scott Bloom, a 58-year-old Prior Lake resident and former University of Minnesota hockey player, has died after being found injured in Prior Lake on August 16, according to information released by the City of Prior Lake.
Bloom was discovered near Belmont Avenue Northwest and Stemmer Ridge Road Northwest, authorities said. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.
According to the City of Prior Lake’s August 19 press release, the cause and manner of Bloom’s death had not yet been formally determined by medical authorities. Officials said additional information would not be released until formal findings were available from the medical examiner’s office.
Scott Bloom’s Minnesota Hockey Legacy
Long before his death, Bloom established a notable place in Minnesota hockey history.
As a forward for Burnsville High School, Bloom played a key role in the Braves’ 1985 state championship victory over Hill-Murray. Burnsville defeated Hill-Murray 4-3 in the championship game, with Bloom scoring twice, including the game-winning goal with 27 seconds remaining in regulation. Historical records identify him as one of Burnsville’s leading players during that championship run.
Bloom returned with Burnsville for the 1986 state tournament and again helped the Braves win the championship. He recorded five goals and five assists during that year’s tournament, including two goals and an assist in Burnsville’s 4-1 championship victory over Hill-Murray.
His high school career earned additional recognition. Minnesota hockey records list Bloom among the finalists for the 1986 Mr. Hockey award, an honor recognizing Minnesota’s top high school hockey players. He was also listed as a 1986 All-Minnesota/All-Metro Player of the Year selection.
University of Minnesota Career and NHL Draft
Bloom continued his hockey career at the University of Minnesota. The Golden Gophers’ official 1986-87 roster lists him as a freshman forward from Burnsville High School.
His college career also put him on the professional hockey radar. The University of Minnesota’s official NHL draft records show that the Calgary Flames selected Bloom in the fifth round, 100th overall, of the 1986 NHL Entry Draft.
Bloom’s path—from a Burnsville state champion to a University of Minnesota player and NHL draft selection—made him part of a notable generation of Minnesota hockey talent.
Investigation Into Bloom’s Death Remains Ongoing
At this stage, authorities have not publicly established the circumstances that led to Bloom’s injuries or formally determined the cause of death.
Because the medical examiner’s findings were still pending as of August 19, details circulating about the incident should be treated cautiously unless confirmed by authorities or Bloom’s family.
This report does not speculate about the circumstances of his death and does not attribute an unconfirmed cause to the incident.
Additional information may be released by the City of Prior Lake, investigating authorities or the Scott County medical examiner when the investigation and medical examination are complete.
