KEARNS, Utah — One man was killed and two others were critically injured after gunfire erupted outside a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints meetinghouse in Kearns, Utah, during a funeral on Monday, August 17, authorities said.
Unified Police Department officers were already in the area after receiving advance warnings that trouble could occur at the gathering. At about 11:25 a.m., officers heard gunfire on the south side of the building and responded immediately.
Police found one critically injured man in the roadway. He was taken to a hospital but later died. A second injured man was seen being carried toward a vehicle. When officers ordered those with him to stop, the vehicle fled, prompting a police pursuit that ended near 4700 South and 4000 West in West Valley City. Officers found the second victim critically injured inside the vehicle.
A third critically injured man was found at the meetinghouse. Police said all three victims were male and that investigators believe their injuries were caused by gunfire. No police officers fired their weapons.
Police Investigate Possible Gang Connection
Unified Police Assistant Chief Justin Hoyal said investigators were treating the shooting as an isolated incident rather than a random attack on the surrounding community. Authorities were also investigating whether gang activity played a role.
Police said they believed they had located everyone involved for questioning, although the investigation remained active and the identities and ages of the three victims had not initially been released. Authorities have not publicly established a complete motive.
The shooting occurred outside the meetinghouse, according to police. Nearby schools, including West Kearns Elementary, Gourley Elementary and Kearns Junior High, were temporarily placed on secure protocol while officers responded. The schools subsequently continued normal operations.
Hospital Access Temporarily Restricted
Intermountain Medical Center in Murray temporarily restricted access and diverted ambulances as a precaution after shooting victims arrived for treatment.
Hospital officials emphasized that there was no shooting or other incident on the medical campus itself and that patients and staff remained safe. The precautionary restrictions were temporary.
Funeral Was Reportedly for Ofa’tangikivaha Angilau
Multiple reports and a funeral flyer shared publicly identified the gathering as the funeral of 23-year-old Ofa’tangikivaha Angilau, who died 10 days earlier in a separate incident in Riverton.
Police had not independently confirmed every detail connecting the August 17 gathering to Angilau in their initial briefing, so that connection should be described as reported rather than as an independently established police finding.
What happened to Angilau on August 7?
Angilau was fatally shot on August 7 after entering a Holiday Oil/Chevron station in Riverton while carrying a shotgun, according to Riverton officials and local reporting.
Authorities initially reported that Angilau had fired the shotgun inside the business. Investigators later determined that the initial report was incorrect. Riverton officials said an armed civilian confronted Angilau and shot him; police were not involved in the shooting, and the civilian cooperated with investigators. No other people were injured at the gas station.
Because the Riverton investigation and the circumstances surrounding the Kearns funeral shooting are separate matters, claims connecting the two incidents should be attributed carefully until investigators establish any confirmed relationship.
A Second Funeral-Related Shooting in Utah This Year
Monday’s violence comes months after another shooting connected to a funeral at an LDS meetinghouse in Salt Lake City.
On January 7, 2026, gunfire erupted outside a meetinghouse at approximately 660 North Redwood Road while a funeral was taking place. Two men, Sione Vatuvei, 38, and Vaea Tulikihihifo, 46, were killed, while six others were injured.
Salt Lake City police said the January shooting stemmed from a dispute involving people who knew one another rather than an attack directed at the church itself. Subsequent investigations included federal charges involving people reported to have connections to the Tongan Crip Gang.
The recurrence of violence around funeral gatherings has heightened concern within Utah’s Tongan community, where funerals can bring together large numbers of relatives, friends and community members.
Community Leaders Respond
Kearns Mayor Jesse Valdez praised Unified Police, Unified Fire Authority, Granite School District personnel and other agencies for their response, particularly the steps taken to protect nearby schools and residents.
The National Tongan American Society expressed condolences and emphasized the importance of funerals within Tongan culture while condemning violence.
For relatives and friends of the deceased, Monday’s shooting added another layer of grief to an already painful loss.
Investigation Remains Active
Authorities have urged members of the public to stay away from areas affected by the investigation while evidence is processed.
At the time of the latest public briefings, police said they did not believe the shooting represented an ongoing threat to the wider community. Investigators continued working to establish the identities of the victims, determine the precise circumstances that led to the gunfire and establish whether there was a gang-related motive.
This article distinguishes confirmed information from preliminary reports and attribution-based claims. Details concerning the victims, relationships between those involved, motive and any potential gang connection may change as investigators release additional information.
Reporting note: Information in this report is based on statements attributed to Unified Police Assistant Chief Justin Hoyal, Riverton public information officials, hospital officials and contemporaneous reporting by established Utah news organizations. Because this investigation remains active, subsequent police statements may supersede preliminary details.
