Remembering Lauren McCluskey: University of Utah Student Murdered on Campus at 21

In 2018, the University of Utah was shaken by the murder of Lauren McCluskey, a 21-year-old student-athlete whose death exposed critical failures in campus safety. A dedicated track and field competitor, McCluskey had briefly dated Melvin Rowland, a 37-year-old who concealed his identity as a registered sex offender. Upon ending the relationship after discovering his deception, she was subjected to relentless stalking and extortion, including threats to release private photographs.

Despite McCluskey and her family repeatedly reporting these threats to campus police, the response was tragically inadequate. An internal investigation later revealed a profound mishandling of her case, which included an officer improperly sharing her explicit photos with colleagues.

On October 22, 2018, Rowland ambushed McCluskey outside her dormitory, fatally shooting her before dying by suicide as police closed in. The university subsequently admitted her death was “preventable,” facing intense criticism for prioritizing its reputation over student safety.

In 2020, a $13.5 million settlement with the university led McCluskey’s family to establish The Lauren McCluskey Foundation. Dedicated to improving campus security and raising awareness about relationship violence and stalking, the foundation honors her memory through action. The University of Utah enacted significant safety reforms, including creating the McCluskey Center for Violence Prevention and renaming its indoor track in her honor. The foundation also launched Lauren’s Promise, a pledge encouraging faculty and staff to “listen and believe” students who report threats, ensuring a supportive environment for survivors.
