Washington Community Mourns Father and Son Lost in Bogachiel River Boating Accident

A Washington community is grieving the loss of Christian Akers, 35, and his 7-year-old son, Wyatt, who died after their boat overturned in the Bogachiel River on October 30. Authorities confirmed that despite urgent rescue efforts, both were pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were alerted around noon after the boat capsized. The emergency call came from another passenger who survived by clinging to a tree until help arrived. That passenger reported that two adults and a child had fallen into the fast-moving water.

A third man, 39-year-old Alphonso Graham of Port Orchard, remains missing. Despite extensive efforts involving drones and multiple agencies, the search was suspended due to dangerous water conditions and poor visibility. Officials said they will resume operations when conditions allow.

“The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office extends our deepest condolences to the friends and family affected by this tragedy,” the department said in a statement.

In a rare moment of hope amid heartbreak, the Akers family dog—initially believed to have been lost in the accident—was safely found days later by a Forks resident and returned home.

Family members and friends have shared emotional tributes to both Christian and Wyatt. Christian, a U.S. Navy veteran and graduate of Georgia Southern University, was remembered as a devoted husband, father, and outdoorsman. “Fishing was his lifelong passion, matched only by his love for the outdoors and for Georgia Bulldogs football,” his obituary read.

Wyatt was remembered for his “big heart and quick smile,” a young boy who loved Pokémon, Legos, and soccer, and who shared a special bond with his brother, Aiden.

“He especially loved spending time with his brother, and their adventures together will remain treasured memories,” the family wrote.

A GoFundMe campaign launched to support Christian’s wife, Daylee Joers Akers, and their surviving son has raised more than $35,000 as of November 6. A celebration of life for the father and son is planned for December 6 on St. Simons Island, Georgia.

As the community mourns, Christian and Wyatt Akers are being remembered not just for how they died, but for how they lived—with courage, curiosity, and an enduring love for each other and the world around them.
