Teenage Girl Dies After Being Struck on Tracks at Loughton Underground Station

LOUGHTON, Essex — A teenage girl has died after sustaining life-threatening injuries in an incident on the tracks at Loughton Underground Station, British Transport Police (BTP) have confirmed.

Emergency services were called to the station at 2:36 p.m. on Monday following reports of “a casualty on the tracks,” according to a BTP spokesperson. Paramedics attended the scene and the girl was rushed to hospital, where she later died from her injuries.

Police have confirmed that the incident is not being treated as suspicious, and a file will be prepared for the coroner in line with standard procedure.

The tragedy prompted a significant emergency response, with roads around the station sealed off for several hours as officers and medical teams worked at the scene. Access to surrounding areas, including the Sainsbury’s roundabout on Old Station Road and routes between Station Road and the High Road, was partially maintained while investigations continued.

Incidents involving rail networks are rare but deeply distressing, particularly in busy commuter areas like Loughton, which serves thousands of passengers daily on the Central line. Transport authorities say such responses prioritize safety, preservation of evidence, and support for those affected.

Local residents expressed shock and sadness as news spread. “It’s heartbreaking,” said one commuter who was delayed by the closure. “You never expect something like this to happen during an ordinary afternoon.”

British Transport Police urged the public to avoid speculation and respect the privacy of the girl’s family and loved ones during what they described as an “incredibly difficult time.”

Support services are available for anyone affected by the incident, and transport officials say normal services will resume once all safety checks are completed.
