The San Antonio, Texas culinary community is mourning the loss of Axel Oliva, co-founder of the Michelin-recognized Leche de Tigre Cebicheria Peruana, who has died at the age of 31.
Oliva’s passing was confirmed through a statement shared by the restaurant on social media. The family did not disclose a cause of death and requested privacy as they grieve. According to an obituary published by Porter Loring Mortuary, he died on Sunday.
Founded in 2023 alongside his brothers, Emil and Alec, Leche de Tigre quickly gained recognition for its authentic Peruvian flavors. The Oliva brothers, born in Laredo to a Peruvian father and Mexican mother, spent years in Peru, an experience that shaped the restaurant’s identity and menu.
Local chefs and patrons have expressed shock and sadness, describing Oliva as a creative force who helped elevate Latin American cuisine in the region. “He brought culture to the plate in a way that felt personal and powerful,” one fellow restaurateur shared.
A public memorial service is scheduled for April 2 at Porter Loring Mortuary. The restaurant will temporarily close as staff and family take time to mourn.
Oliva’s death is a significant loss for San Antonio’s growing food scene, where emerging chefs like him have been redefining the city’s culinary narrative through heritage and innovation.
