Bougival Accident: Sanitation Worker Killed in Collision Between Garbage Truck and Lorry on D113

Bougival

A 50-year-old sanitation worker tragically lost his life on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, in Bougival (Yvelines) following a serious road accident involving a garbage truck and a lorry. The incident occurred around 11 a.m. near the Résidence des Lions on D113, a heavily used road in the region.

According to the Yvelines Fire and Rescue Department (Codis 78), the worker—known as a ripeur—fell from the rear footboard of the garbage truck and was fatally struck by the second vehicle. Emergency responders attempted resuscitation but were unsuccessful.

Three other individuals suffered minor injuries in the crash: both drivers and another sanitation worker. They were transported in “relative emergency” to nearby hospitals for treatment, Codis 78 confirmed.

The tragedy significantly disrupted traffic, with the D113 closed in both directions between Saint-Germain-en-Laye and Marly-le-Roi for over three hours to allow for rescue operations and an initial investigation.

The accident has reignited concerns around worker safety for municipal waste collection teams, who often operate in high-risk environments. Ripeurs perform physically demanding tasks and regularly face hazardous road conditions, making their protection a critical issue for local authorities and employers alike.

An investigation is underway to clarify the precise circumstances surrounding the collision. Authorities will examine whether road safety protocols were followed and whether any mechanical or human errors contributed to the incident.

Local officials have extended their condolences to the victim’s family and offered support to affected colleagues. A psychological support unit may be made available for municipal workers impacted by the tragedy.

The community of Bougival mourns the loss of a dedicated public servant who died in the line of duty. His death serves as a solemn reminder of the dangers sanitation workers face daily and the importance of reinforcing road safety and operational standards.
