A fatal crash on Interstate 75 in Wesley Chapel, Florida, claimed the life of a 17-year-old Land O’ Lakes teenager on Thursday morning, prompting hours-long traffic delays and renewed concerns over road safety in the region.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the crash occurred around 10:10 a.m. when the teen, riding a Kawasaki motorcycle, attempted to change lanes near the State Road 54 exit. In doing so, his motorcycle collided with a dump truck driven by a 65-year-old man from Crystal River. The impact caused the motorcycle to overturn and slide under the truck’s trailer. The young rider was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities shut down all southbound lanes of I-75 as troopers and emergency crews responded to the scene. Traffic gradually resumed around noon, though congestion remained heavy for several hours.
The Florida Highway Patrol has not yet released the teen’s name out of respect for his family’s privacy. Investigators are still determining the precise circumstances that led to the collision.
