BOUCHERVILLE, Que. — A tragic chain-reaction crash on Highway 30 eastbound claimed the lives of a 34-year-old woman and her 5-year-old child Wednesday afternoon, while four others were injured.
The collision, which involved two transport trucks and several passenger vehicles, occurred near kilometre 82 around rush hour. Traffic remained heavily disrupted into the evening, with the highway closed in both directions near De Montarville Boulevard. Police advised drivers to detour via De Montarville, Nobel Street, and Highway 20 east.
According to Sûreté du Québec spokesperson Élizabeth Marquis-Guy, six people were taken to hospital following the crash. Two of them, later identified as the mother and her child, succumbed to their injuries. The remaining four sustained only minor injuries.
Preliminary information suggests one of the heavy trucks was unable to stop in time when traffic slowed, sparking the deadly pileup. Collision reconstruction specialists from the SQ were dispatched to determine the exact cause.
The accident has shaken the local community, highlighting once again the dangers of heavy traffic corridors where passenger vehicles and transport trucks share the road.
