DURHAM, NORTH CAROLINA — Chris Spatola, a longtime ESPN college basketball analyst, former Duke assistant coach and U.S. Army veteran, died unexpectedly at age 47, ESPN and the Krzyzewski family confirmed this week. His death was reported as occurring Monday, September 21, 2026. No cause of death has been publicly disclosed.
Spatola built a career across college basketball, military service, coaching and broadcasting. He played basketball at the United States Military Academy at West Point from 1998 to 2002 and was a two-time All-Patriot League selection. After graduating, he served as an Army captain and deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Duke career and championship connection
Spatola joined the Duke men’s basketball program in 2007 and remained on the staff through 2012 under legendary coach Mike Krzyzewski, his father-in-law. During his time with the Blue Devils, the program won the 2010 NCAA championship.
His connection to Duke continued after his coaching career. Spatola later became a familiar voice in college basketball coverage, working with ESPN and SiriusXM. ESPN said his perspective was shaped by his experiences as a student-athlete, Army veteran, coach and broadcaster.
