Tragedy at Belfast’s Emerge Festival: Teen Girl Dies, Two Others Hospitalized – Police Investigation Ongoing

Ireland – A teenage girl has died after falling seriously ill during the Emerge music festival in south Belfast on Sunday. Police confirmed she later passed away in hospital, and investigations are under way to determine the circumstances.

Two other festivalgoers were also admitted to hospital after becoming unwell at the same event, held at Boucher Playing Fields. A woman in her 30s remains in a serious but stable condition, while a teenage boy has been treated and is expected to make a full recovery.

Emerge, which has grown into one of Ireland’s largest electronic music festivals since its launch in 2022, drew more than 40,000 people over the weekend. This year’s lineup featured over 80 artists performing across four stages, with headline sets from Fatboy Slim on Saturday and Belfast’s own electronic duo Bicep on Sunday.

Alliance councillor Micky Murray, a former Lord Mayor of Belfast, described the news as “heartbreaking” and confirmed he has requested an urgent meeting with council officials and festival organisers.

“This is utterly devastating, and my deepest sympathies go to the family of the young woman who has tragically lost her life,” Murray said. “I hope those still in hospital make a full recovery. Festivals should be safe spaces for people to celebrate music and community — no one expects tragedy to unfold in such an environment.”

Police have urged the public not to speculate as their enquiries continue.

Meanwhile, St John Ambulance NI issued a clarification that it had no involvement in the festival. The volunteer-led organisation expressed condolences to the teenager’s family and friends, but stressed it had “no association with the event where this fatality reportedly occurred.”

Festival organisers have been approached for comment.
