The African football community is in mourning following the death of Razak Omotoyossi, the Nigerian-born striker who became one of Benin’s most celebrated international stars. He was 39. The cause of his passing has not yet been made public.

Omotoyossi, who switched allegiance from Nigeria to represent Benin, earned 55 international caps and scored 21 goals for the Squirrels. That tally placed him among the nation’s most prolific scorers, cementing his reputation as a national icon.

His most memorable moment came during the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. In a performance that stunned the continent, Omotoyossi scored all four goals in Benin’s 4–1 victory over rivals Togo, finishing the campaign as joint top scorer alongside Cameroon legend Samuel Eto’o. That feat etched his name into the history of African football.

At club level, Omotoyossi’s career spanned several countries and competitions. He rose to prominence with Sweden’s Helsingborgs IF, where he played in the UEFA Champions League, before moving to France to join Ligue 1 side FC Metz. His football journey also took him to clubs in Morocco, Egypt, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia, making him one of Benin’s most recognized global exports.

Tributes have begun to pour in from across Africa and beyond. Former teammates and fans have praised Omotoyossi not only for his achievements on the pitch but also for the passion and resilience that defined his career. His story inspired countless young players in both Benin and Nigeria, showcasing the power of sport to transcend borders.
