Hayride Accident in New York Injures 14

WELLSBURG, N.Y. — A tractor pulling a hayride overturned in Wellsburg, New York, on Sunday, October 4, 2026, injuring 14 people, including several who suffered critical injuries.

The crash happened shortly after 4:30 p.m. near Berwick Turnpike and Main Street, according to the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office. The tractor was carrying a group of young people during a hayride organized by members of a German Baptist community.

What Happened

Chemung County Sheriff Bill Schrom said the tractor was traveling downhill at a high rate of speed when the driver attempted to turn. The tractor overturned, causing the wagon to separate. Riders were thrown from the wagon as it continued moving.

The driver, identified as a 16-year-old from Gillett, Pennsylvania, was also seriously injured. Authorities said he was taken to a hospital and remained in critical condition in the latest update.

Injuries and Emergency Response

Authorities initially reported about 20 people aboard the hayride. Later information placed 16 people directly involved in the crash, including 15 people on the wagon and the driver. Fourteen people were treated for injuries, with several requiring hospital care.

At least three people were reported to be in critical condition during the initial response. Emergency crews transported injured passengers to hospitals in the region, while one seriously injured person was airlifted for further treatment.

Investigation Underway

Investigators are examining whether a mechanical problem contributed to the crash. Sheriff Schrom said one of the tractor’s brakes appeared badly burned, raising the possibility of brake failure. Authorities have not issued a final determination on the cause.

The Chemung County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the accident as officials work to establish the full sequence of events.
