John Ryan, 57, of Havertown, Pickup Driver Died in a West Chester Pike Accident

HAVERTOWN, Pa. — A deadly traffic collision on West Chester Pike in Haverford Township left one person dead and eight others injured after a pickup truck struck multiple vehicles, police said.

The crash happened around 12:15 p.m. Saturday, October 3, 2026, beginning near Darby Road and continuing for about 1.5 miles to West Chester Pike and Eagle Road. Police said the pickup was traveling erratically and struck several vehicles before hitting a U-Haul truck.

Driver Identified

Police identified the pickup driver as 57-year-old John Ryan of Havertown. He died at the scene.

Haverford Township Police Chief John Viola said investigators believe Ryan may have experienced a medical emergency before the crash. Police also confirmed that his driver’s license had been revoked for medical reasons in 2025.

Authorities have not said that the revoked license itself caused the collision. Investigators are still working to establish the sequence of events and the medical circumstances involved.

Eight People Injured

The crash involved multiple vehicles, with police and local reports placing the total at between 14 and 16 vehicles as investigators assessed the scene. Eight people were taken to hospitals with injuries described as non-life-threatening.

Surveillance footage captured part of the crash, showing the pickup traveling through the area before striking other vehicles and eventually overturning.

Investigation Continues

West Chester Pike was closed while emergency crews and investigators worked at the scene. The roadway has since reopened.

The investigation remains focused on determining what happened before the pickup began traveling erratically and whether the suspected medical emergency contributed to the collision. Further details may emerge as police complete their review.
