Houston, Texas — The Lakewood Church community is grieving the loss of Dolores “Dodie” Osteen, co-founder and matriarch of one of the largest congregations in the United States. Dodie died peacefully at the age of 91, surrounded by family, leaving behind a legacy that spans decades of ministry, compassion, and unwavering faith.
Known affectionately as “Mama Dodie”, she stood beside her late husband, Pastor John Osteen, in building Lakewood Church from a small congregation in 1959 to a global ministry. After John’s passing in 1999, Dodie continued to serve faithfully under the leadership of her son, Joel Osteen, remaining a constant source of encouragement and prayer for members and visitors alike.
A Life of Faith and Miracles
Dodie’s influence extended beyond the pulpit. In the 1980s, she faced a terminal cancer diagnosis but experienced what she and many others believed to be a miraculous healing. That personal testimony became a central part of her ministry to the sick and hurting. She was often seen praying over individuals in hospitals, homes, and at church services—an act that defined her mission.
In an emotional statement, Joel Osteen said, “She was our heart, our encourager, and a living example of unwavering faith. We will carry her love and her prayers in everything we do.”

Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg shared a personal encounter with Dodie’s compassion. In 2010, Ogg’s mother, battling stage 4 cancer, was visited by Dodie after the family reached out. Dodie prayed over her, and for two weeks afterward, her mother was pain-free—time the family cherishes to this day.
“Dodie gave us the gift of being a family one last time,” Ogg recalled.

Hundreds of pastors, faith leaders, and friends attended her celebration of life service at Lakewood Church, including music legend Stevie Wonder, underscoring the breadth of her reach. Attendees remembered her as a “prayer warrior” and “miracle maker,” whose love and steadfast belief in God’s promises inspired millions.
