SANGER, TEXAS — A 13-year-old student died after a Sanger Independent School District school bus overturned in Denton County on Thursday, September 24, 2026, according to Sanger ISD and the Texas Department of Public Safety.
The crash happened at about 4:55 p.m. near Huling Road and Lois Road East. Texas DPS said the bus was travelling northbound when it left the roadway, struck a culvert and rolled over.
Student dies after crash
The bus was carrying the driver and four students. The 13-year-old student was taken to a local hospital, where the student later died from injuries sustained in the crash. The student’s name had not been publicly released by Sanger ISD in the district’s initial statement.
The bus driver, identified by DPS as 38-year-old Jesse Padgett of Sanger, and the other three students were treated at the scene for minor injuries, according to CBS Texas.
Investigation underway
Sanger Police and Sanger Fire responded to the crash, while the Texas Department of Public Safety took responsibility for the investigation. Officials had not immediately determined why the bus left the roadway.
Sanger ISD described the incident as a single-vehicle accident and said it was working with law enforcement and emergency personnel. The district also expressed condolences to the student’s family and others affected by the crash.
The investigation remains ongoing, and additional information is expected from authorities as the circumstances surrounding the crash are established.
