Catherine O’Hara, Acclaimed Actor and Comedy Icon, Dies at 70, Los Angeles Mourns

Catherine O’Hara, a versatile and Grammy-winning actor whose career spanned five decades and delighted audiences from Broadway to television screens, has died at age 70. Her agency, Creative Artists Agency (CAA), confirmed Friday that she passed away at her home in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles following a brief illness. The cause of death has not been publicly disclosed.

O’Hara’s loss reverberated across Hollywood and the global entertainment community, where her blend of comic timing and poignant humanity made her both a beloved figure and an enduring influence.

Born in Toronto, Canada, as the sixth of seven children, O’Hara’s early talent blossomed in sketch comedy. She first gained widespread recognition in SCTV Network 90, a groundbreaking Canadian comedy series, earning her first Emmy Award in 1982 for her writing contributions. Her remarkable range soon led to feature film roles, including the wildly popular Home Alone films, in which she portrayed Kate McCallister, the befuddled and loving mother of Macaulay Culkin’s Kevin.

Her later career found a new peak with the critically acclaimed series Schitt’s Creek, where her portrayal of the eccentric Moira Rose garnered an Emmy Award in 2020. Tributes poured in from colleagues and fans alike, many pointing to O’Hara’s ability to elevate every scene with depth and nuance. “She was fearless, funny, and fiercely genuine,” one Schitt’s Creek co-star said, reflecting a sentiment echoed across social media.

O’Hara also appeared in acclaimed films such as Best in Show, A Mighty Wind, and Beetlejuice, and more recently earned a Golden Globe nomination for her role in Apple TV+’s The Studio opposite Seth Rogen.

Her personal life was equally rich. She met her husband, production designer Bo Welch, on the set of Beetlejuice; the couple married in 1992 and raised two sons together.

Catherine O’Hara’s legacy is stitched into the fabric of modern comedy. Her work showcased not just humor, but honesty—bringing complexity and heart to characters who continue to resonate with audiences worldwide. She is survived by her husband, children, and a legacy of laughter that spans generations.
