The campus of Southeast Missouri State University is grieving the loss of sophomore kicker Danny Duray, who died early Wednesday morning at just 20 years old.
Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Brady Barke confirmed the news, calling it “a heartbreaking loss” for the department and broader university community. Head coach Tom Matukewicz described the day as one of the most difficult of his career, adding that the team would “wrap our arms around” the Duray family.
Duray, an Arlington Heights, Illinois native, was pursuing a degree in business administration. After beginning his collegiate career at SEMO, he transferred to the College of DuPage before returning for the 2026 season. He was coming off a strong year, converting 32 of 33 extra points and 10 of 13 field goals, totaling 62 points.
While details surrounding his death have not been released, tributes from teammates and students have poured in, reflecting the close-knit nature of Football Championship Subdivision programs. Sports psychologists note that sudden losses can deeply affect team dynamics, underscoring the importance of campus counseling and support.
As SEMO prepares to honor Duray’s memory, the focus remains on supporting his family and teammates during an unimaginable loss.
