The Lincoln, Nebraska community is mourning the loss of Dr. Katherine “Kate” Gogela, 42, a beloved pediatrician and breastfeeding medicine specialist, after she was fatally struck by a vehicle on Friday afternoon. The Lincoln Police Department (LPD) confirmed that Gogela was crossing at a marked crosswalk near South 84th Street and South Cherrywood Drive when she was hit by a northbound vehicle. She was transported to a local hospital, where she later died.

According to LPD, the 19-year-old driver remained on the scene and is cooperating fully with investigators. Police reported no evidence of speeding or substance use, and no citations have been issued at this time.

Dr. Gogela had been a valued member of Lincoln Pediatric Group (LPG) since 2017, where she specialized in pediatric care and breastfeeding medicine. LPG shared a heartfelt tribute, noting that Gogela’s dedication began early as she assisted in the practice’s chart room and front desk before completing college, medical school, and residency.

“Kate was a spectacular part of our group—a skilled, caring clinician, a loyal partner, a trusted friend, and a truly wonderful wife, mother, daughter and sister,” the clinic said in a social media post. “Her example of dedication and care set a high standard for us all, and we miss her greatly.”

A graduate of Lincoln East High School (2002), Gogela earned her Bachelor of Science at Creighton University and her Doctorate from the University of Nebraska Medical Center. She leaves behind her husband, three sons, and a daughter, who are now grieving the sudden loss of a devoted mother and wife.

Community members have expressed shock and sorrow over the tragedy, highlighting the importance of pedestrian safety and the profound impact Gogela had on patients, families, and colleagues alike. Her legacy as a compassionate physician and committed community member is expected to endure in Lincoln for years to come.
