Michael Reagan, Conservative Commentator Dies at 80: The Eldest Son of Former U.S. Pre ident Ronald Reagan

United States – Michael Reagan, the eldest son of former U.S. President Ronald Reagan, has died at the age of 80, his family announced Tuesday. He passed away Sunday in Los Angeles, surrounded by loved ones, following a battle with cancer, according to family and conservative advocacy groups.

“Michael was and will always remain a beloved husband, father, and grandpa,” the Reagan family said in a statement. “Our hearts are deeply broken as we grieve the loss of a man who meant so much to all who knew and loved him.”

Though forever linked to one of the most influential presidencies of the 20th century, Michael Reagan built a public identity of his own as a conservative political commentator, nationally syndicated radio talk show host, author, and speaker. Over decades, he became a familiar voice in conservative media, often defending the policies and philosophy that defined the Reagan era: limited government, individual liberty, and a strong national defense.

The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute described him as a “steadfast guardian of his father’s legacy.” Fred Ryan, chairman of the foundation’s board, said Michael Reagan “lived a life shaped by conviction, purpose, and an abiding devotion to President Reagan’s ideals,” noting that he consistently used his platform to promote freedom and personal responsibility.

Tributes also came from conservative leaders and organizations that worked closely with him. Former Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, now president of the Young America’s Foundation, called Reagan “a wonderful inspiration,” especially to young conservatives. “He did more than tell stories about his father,” Walker said. “He challenged the next generation to live out those values and to be ‘happy warriors’ in defense of America’s founding principles.”

Born on March 18, 1945, Michael Reagan was adopted shortly after birth by Ronald Reagan and his first wife, actress Jane Wyman. He grew up in a blended family that included siblings Maureen and Christine Reagan, as well as Patti Davis and Ron Reagan from his father’s later marriage to Nancy Reagan.

Michael Reagan is survived by his wife, Colleen, their children, Ashley and Cameron, and several grandchildren. As tributes continue, supporters and critics alike acknowledge his enduring role as a prominent—and often passionate—voice in modern American conservatism, determined to keep the Reagan legacy alive for future generations.
