Wallace, a native of New Zealand, passed away on the Saturday night evening of June 7, 2025, in United States. He was 43.
His death was confirmed Sunday through social media by Ardsley Stud, the storied New Zealand breeding farm owned by his parents, Jim and Mary Wallace. Ardsley, where Michael’s lifelong journey in the Thoroughbred world began, was originally purchased by his grandfather in 1971 and remains a cornerstone of New Zealand’s breeding industry.
Michael Wallace’s life was deeply intertwined with the horses he worked with, the families he built around them, and the legacy he leaves behind in every winner’s circle where his intuition and knowledge played a part.
A Lifelong Student of the Thoroughbred
Raised on the rolling pastures of Ardsley Stud, Wallace’s early years were shaped by the rhythms of breeding seasons and the lessons passed down by his family. His passion for the sport led him to participate in the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Sunline Scholarship, a prestigious program designed to give young industry professionals an immersive, global education in the business of racing and breeding.
Wallace completed part of that training with an externship at Rich Hill Farm, further honing his skills in bloodstock evaluation, international market dynamics, and horsemanship—skills that would define his career and distinguish him on the world stage.
The Architect Behind Justify
Michael Wallace’s name became internationally recognized during his eight-year tenure as Chief Operating Officer for China Horse Club, an emerging powerhouse in global Thoroughbred ownership at the time. Wallace was instrumental in guiding the group’s bloodstock strategy in its formative years, securing elite prospects that would go on to dominate the sport.
One of his most impactful decisions came at the 2016 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, where he was part of the team that selected a $500,000 colt by Scat Daddy, purchased in partnership with Maverick Racing, the WinStar Farm sales entity led by Elliott Walden. That colt was later named Justify.
Under trainer Bob Baffert, Justify captured the 2018 Triple Crown, an accomplishment made all the more historic because he did so without ever racing as a two-year-old. He was only the 13th horse in history to win the Triple Crown and the second to do so unbeaten. His subsequent stud deal with Coolmore, reported to be worth $75 million, was a landmark moment in racing and business.
Justify’s success wasn’t just a triumph for China Horse Club—it was a testament to Wallace’s eye for raw talent and his ability to manage major partnerships in high-stakes environments. During his time at the China Horse Club, the team secured more than a dozen Grade/Group 1 victories and celebrated five Eclipse Awards.

After stepping down from China Horse Club in 2021, Wallace launched his own independent bloodstock consulting business. His experience and reputation ensured that he was quickly in demand by leading stables around the globe.
He worked closely with St. Elias Stable, owned by Vincent and Teresa Viola, and was part of the team that identified and developed Grade 1 winner Mindframe, among other standout horses. Wallace also collaborated with Kuldeep Singh Rajput’s Gandharvi Racing Stables, where he helped secure Grade 3 winner Hall of Fame, a colt campaigned in part by the Coolmore partnership.
Wallace’s global approach and deep network made him one of the most respected bloodstock professionals of his generation. From the auction rings of Kentucky to the paddocks of New Zealand, his influence was far-reaching and his integrity widely recognized.

Away from the auction grounds and racetracks, Michael Wallace was a husband, a father, and a man rooted in his values. He is survived by his wife, Kristi Wallace, and their five children.
