Phumlani Msibi Death: SuperSport Commentator and Iconic South African Broadcaster, Dies at 57

South Africa mourns the passing of SuperSport commentator Phumlani Msibi, who has died at 57 after a brief illness.

Johannesburg –  SuperSport and the South African sporting community are mourning the passing of veteran broadcaster Phumlani Msibi, who died on Friday at the age of 57 after a short illness.

Widely recognised for his work in football and boxing commentary, Msibi became a trusted and respected voice across the continent. His signature phrase, “Coach, thoughts please?”, became a staple of post-match SuperSport interviews, reflecting both his professionalism and ability to connect with coaches and fans alike.

Msibi began his career in the late 1990s as a ring announcer for the late boxing promoter Mzi Mnguni. His natural charisma and deep knowledge of the sport saw him become the first to offer bilingual boxing commentary in both isiZulu and English on SuperSport, setting a new standard for inclusivity in sports broadcasting.

His career reached a defining moment in 2007 when SuperSport acquired broadcast rights to the Premier Soccer League (PSL). Msibi transitioned seamlessly into football commentary, becoming one of the channel’s most recognisable presenters. His on-screen presence extended to live coverage, studio analysis, and magazine-style programming, where he offered insight, humour, and empathy in equal measure.

Known affectionately as “Mr Versatile”, Msibi appeared on flagship shows like Super Saturday and Soccer Africa, and led the deeply respected series Mzansi Legends. Through Mzansi Legends, he interviewed South African football icons such as Dr Irvin Khoza, Dr Kaizer Motaung, and the late Thomas Madigage, offering viewers a rare glimpse into the personal journeys of the country’s football pioneers.

His effortless command of both isiZulu and English, coupled with his warmth and humility, made interviewees comfortable and endeared him to audiences across Africa.

Though most associated with football and boxing, Msibi’s knowledge and passion extended to horse racing, another arena where he earned the respect of fans and peers.

SuperSport CEO Rendani Ramovha paid tribute to Msibi’s enduring influence, saying:

“Phumlani Msibi was one of the most beloved sports commentators SuperSport has ever had. He was an outstanding professional, admired by his peers, and a respected family man. On behalf of SuperSport and the MultiChoice family, we extend our deepest condolences to his family. His passing is a profound loss to our organisation and the entire sporting community.”

Before joining SuperSport, Msibi built his foundation in broadcasting at the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), where he began developing his storytelling voice and sharp analytical style.

Over his decades-long career, Phumlani Msibi not only covered sport — he celebrated its spirit. His legacy lies in how he elevated South African sports media, broke language barriers, and helped shape how millions experienced their favourite games.

He is survived by his family, friends, colleagues, and a generation of sports lovers who will forever associate his voice with excellence and passion in sports journalism.
