Deputy Rodney Rickman, 56, Dies After Medical Emergency; Franklin County Sheriff’s Office Mourns

COLUMBUS, Ohio —  Deputy Rodney Rickman, 56, of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office has died following a medical emergency, according to a statement from the Sheriff’s Office.

Rickman experienced the medical emergency on Saturday. Despite efforts to save his life, he died on the morning of August 20, 2026, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The circumstances surrounding his medical emergency have not been publicly detailed. No additional cause of death has been reported, and no assumptions about his medical condition should be made beyond the information released by authorities.

Rodney Rickman’s Service to Franklin County

Rickman had served as a deputy with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office for the previous two years.

His relationship with the Sheriff’s Office, however, began much earlier.

Before becoming a deputy, Rickman spent eight years working with Franklin County Fleet Management. During that time, he worked alongside members of the Sheriff’s Office and developed relationships with many of the people he would later serve beside as a law-enforcement officer.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, Rickman frequently spoke about his desire to serve and protect the community and to become part of the law-enforcement family he had come to know through his previous work and military service.

He ultimately answered that calling by becoming a deputy.

The Sheriff’s Office described his service as a source of gratitude and remembered him for the time he devoted to serving Franklin County.

Law-Enforcement Community Remembers Deputy Rickman

News of Rickman’s death prompted condolences from members of the broader Franklin County law-enforcement community.

The Perry Township Police Department publicly mourned Rickman’s passing and remembered him for his two years of service as a deputy following his eight years with Franklin County Fleet Management.

The department extended condolences to Rickman’s family, loved ones and colleagues at the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.

Other members of the law-enforcement community also shared messages of remembrance, honoring Rickman’s dedication and expressing sympathy to those closest to him.

Medical Staff Thanked for Care

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office also expressed appreciation to the physicians, nurses and staff at Mount Carmel East Hospital, where Rickman received medical care.

The Sheriff’s Office specifically recognized the hospital staff for the compassionate care they provided to Rickman and his family during the medical emergency.

A Career Rooted in Service

Rickman’s career with Franklin County reflected a progression from public-service support work into direct law enforcement.

His eight years with Franklin County Fleet Management placed him in regular contact with members of the Sheriff’s Office. His later decision to become a deputy allowed him to serve in the role he had long expressed a desire to pursue.
