A Community in Mourning
The Ottawa community is reeling from the loss of Kristi Blok, a beloved teacher, volunteer, and mother of four, who passed away on September 18, 2025, after a brave battle with mucosal melanoma. Surrounded by her family in Manotick, Kristi’s final moments were marked by the grace and dignity that defined her life. She was 47.
Her husband, Greg Blok, shared an emotional tribute online, describing his wife as “a light in this world—an incredible mother, wife, teacher, and community pillar who inspired so many with her kindness, faith, and unwavering spirit.”
A Life of Devotion and Courage
For 25 years, Kristi and Greg built a life centered on family, faith, and community. Together they raised four children—Jameson, Breuklynn, Channing, and Lincoln—who were, by all accounts, the center of Kristi’s universe.
Even in the face of cancer, Kristi embodied resilience. According to Greg, she fought with “incredible courage, never complaining, still laughing and smiling, always putting our family first.” Her positivity and strength offered lessons in perseverance that resonated far beyond her immediate circle.
Her parents, George and Marnie Bennett, expressed their heartbreak in a family statement: “Kristi was our eldest daughter… her spirit will live on in her children and in everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.”
A Teacher, Mentor, and Volunteer
Beyond her role as a mother and wife, Kristi was deeply woven into Ottawa’s social fabric. She inspired thousands through teaching, volunteering, and mentoring, remembered for her direct honesty, laughter, and fierce dedication to others.
The Myers Riders Football Club, where she served as manager of the U14 OSFL team, also honored her legacy. “Kristi was so much more than a dedicated manager—she was a guiding presence, a mom whose love extended far beyond her own children,” the club shared. Players will wear remembrance stickers this season in tribute.
This gesture illustrates the breadth of Kristi’s influence. She wasn’t just present—she was engaged, shaping lives with quiet strength and kindness.
The Broader Impact of a Life Well-Lived
Kristi’s story matters not only to her family and friends but to Ottawa as a whole. Her contributions reflect a larger narrative of how local leaders—teachers, parents, volunteers—become the backbone of communities. While her battle with mucosal melanoma highlights the harsh realities of rare cancers, her life emphasizes resilience, compassion, and service.
Health experts note that rare cancers like mucosal melanoma often present unique challenges in treatment, underlining the importance of medical research and the role of supportive institutions like the Ottawa Hospital, which Kristi’s family publicly thanked for its compassionate care.
Tributes and Legacy
Messages of condolence have poured in from across Ottawa and beyond. Friends recall her generosity and fierce love for her children, while fellow parents describe her as the kind of volunteer who always stepped up without hesitation.
A family friend summed up the community’s sentiment: “Kristi reminded us that every day is a gift. She showed us what it means to live with courage and love, even in the face of hardship.”
For those mourning, Greg has encouraged sharing personal stories about Kristi so that her children can grow up knowing the many ways their mother inspired others.
Carrying Her Light Forward
While the loss is devastating, Kristi’s legacy will endure—in her family, in the countless students she taught, in the young athletes she mentored, and in the community she served. Her life stands as a reminder that strength is found not only in what we achieve but in how we uplift others along the way.
As Ottawa continues to grieve, Kristi’s example of grace, resilience, and generosity remains a guiding light.
