Karur, Tamil Nadu
A tragic road accident on the Namakkal–Karur National Highway in Tamil Nadu claimed five lives, including two children, and left 27 others injured early Saturday morning near Chinna Vadugapatti.
The accident occurred around 5:30 a.m. when a private omni bus traveling from Bengaluru to Nagercoil rammed into a tractor. The impact forced the bus into the opposite lane, where it collided head-on with a maxicab, resulting in a devastating loss of life.
Four passengers in the maxicab died on the spot. They were identified as:
- Sasikumar, 52
- Arun Thiruppathi, 45
- Kamatchi Ashwin, 10 (son of Arun) — all from Kovilpatti, Thoothukudi district
- Elil Dhasana, 12, from Virudhunagar district
Later in the day, Hemavarshini, 20, also from Virudhunagar, succumbed to injuries at Karur Government Medical College Hospital.
The collision left 27 others injured. Victims were rushed to Karur Government Medical College Hospital and private hospitals nearby. Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services, along with police, carried out urgent rescue operations at the scene.
The crash has sparked renewed concern about road safety on the Namakkal–Karur Highway, a vital corridor for inter-district travel that has seen recurring accidents.
In response, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin expressed his condolences and announced financial support through the Chief Minister’s Public Relief Fund. Families of the deceased will receive a solatium of ₹3 lakh each. Those with severe injuries will receive ₹1 lakh, and those with minor injuries will be given ₹50,000. The Chief Minister also directed health officials to provide specialized care to the injured.
“We are ensuring all necessary medical support and assistance to those affected by this unfortunate accident,” he said in his official statement.
The sudden loss of lives — especially children with dreams yet to be fulfilled — has left families and communities in deep mourning. Many are now calling for stricter traffic enforcement, better lighting, and improved signage along the Namakkal–Karur National Highway to prevent further tragedies.
As investigations continue, the names of Sasikumar, Arun Thiruppathi, Kamatchi Ashwin, Elil Dhasana, and Hemavarshini stand as a solemn reminder of how quickly lives can be lost on unsafe roads.
