Tahlequah Ok – Holli Carnes, 18, of the Tahlequah area, a beloved Sequoyah High School senior and Lady Indians softball player, died Tuesday morning, August 11, 2026, in a two-vehicle crash in Cherokee County, Oklahoma.

According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 9 a.m. at the intersection of U.S. Highway 62 and West 814 Road. Holli was not wearing a seat belt. The other driver, a woman from Porum, was injured. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Holli was just beginning her senior year at Sequoyah High School and was a cherished member of the Lady Indians softball team. She was remembered by teammates, coaches, classmates, and the wider community as a young woman full of grit, energy, and heart—with a bright future ahead of her.

A Family Rooted in Service

Holli was the youngest of three sisters and a beloved aunt. Her mother, Claudia Carnes, has taught at Woodall Elementary for 17 years. Her father, Sergeant Todd Carnes, has served as a Tahlequah Police Officer for 20 years. Friends and community members have noted that Claudia rarely missed a practice or game during Holli’s softball career, reflecting the close bond the family shared around the sport and one another.

Sequoyah High School issued a statement expressing profound sadness over the loss:

“It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic loss of one of our Sequoyah seniors, Holli Carnes. Holli was beginning her senior year at Sequoyah and was a cherished member of our Lady Indians softball family. Her loss will be deeply felt throughout our school and the entire Tahlequah community. Our hearts and thoughts are with Holli’s family, friends, teammates, classmates, and all those who knew and loved her during this incredibly difficult time. We also extend our heartfelt thoughts and deepest sympathies to the Tahlequah community, including the students, families, faculty, and staff of Tahlequah High School and Woodall Elementary, as they grieve alongside us. Holli will be greatly missed and forever remembered as a beloved part of the Sequoyah family.”

A community memorial was held Tuesday evening at the Sequoyah football field to support the Carnes family and others affected. The Lady Indians’ scheduled softball game that day was canceled. Counseling and support services have been made available for students, faculty, and staff.

Community Support

A GoFundMe campaign has been established to help the family with funeral expenses and immediate needs during this time of profound grief. The Carnes family has long given of themselves through education and public safety; the community is now rallying to support them in return.

Funeral and memorial arrangements are pending and will be shared by the family when available.

Holli Carnes leaves behind her parents, Claudia and Todd; her sisters; extended family; teammates; classmates; and a community that will remember her bright spirit, competitive drive on the softball field, and the joy she brought to those around her.

She will be deeply missed.
