Gayatri Gautham of Grand Forks, North Dakota, a recent Red River High School graduate and incoming Columbia University student, has passed away. She was a bright, accomplished young leader whose curiosity, service, and potential left a lasting impression on those who knew her.
A 2025 delegate to Flickertail Girls State (North Dakota Girls State) representing Red River High School, Gayatri was preparing to begin her college career at Columbia University when she died. The North Dakota Girls State organization shared the news with heavy hearts:
“It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that our 2025 delegate from Red River HS, Gayatri Gautham, has passed away. She was just about to head off to Columbia University to start her college career. We will share memorial arrangements when they become available. May she rest in peace.”
A Young Leader with Wide-Ranging Passions
Gayatri Gautham was a high school student from Grand Forks who stood out for her intellectual curiosity and commitment to both technical excellence and civic engagement. She developed a strong interest in the connections between STEM fields and public policy, with particular focus on science, technology, and cybersecurity.
She participated in the prestigious National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y), completing both a virtual Mandarin summer intensive and a summer abroad program in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. These experiences deepened her appreciation for cultural exchange and global perspectives.
Beyond academics, Gayatri was actively involved in Scouts, where she built leadership skills and a dedication to community service. She also engaged in Debate, Student Congress, and Girls State, activities that strengthened her understanding of government, civic responsibility, and how policy shapes innovation and technology.
In spring 2025 she was selected as a Fellow with the YIP Institute, further reflecting her drive to explore solutions at the intersection of technology, policy, and positive societal change.
Family and Community
Gayatri was the daughter of Shanta Gautham, MD, an internal medicine physician practicing with Altru Health System in Grand Forks. The Gautham family and the broader Grand Forks and Red River High School communities are mourning a young woman remembered for her kindness, intellect, and promise.
Memorial arrangements will be announced by the family and North Dakota Girls State when available.
Gayatri Gautham’s life, though far too brief, exemplified the best of what young people can achieve through curiosity, service, and a commitment to learning. She leaves behind family, friends, classmates, fellow Girls State delegates, and mentors who were inspired by her potential and will carry her memory forward.
May she rest in peace.
