Community in Shock After Fatal Wollert Shooting Leaves Young Man Dead
Wollert Shooting — A quiet laneway in Melbourne’s northern suburb of Wollert became the scene of a fatal shooting on Thursday morning, as a 21-year-old man was gunned down in what police are calling a “targeted” attack.
According to Victoria Police, the young man — a local resident known to law enforcement — was approached by an unidentified male shortly before 9am behind Champions Parade. He was shot at close range and died at the scene despite emergency response efforts.
The suspected gunman fled in a vehicle, which authorities believe may have later been found burned out on Army Street in nearby Reservoir. Investigators are now working to confirm if the incinerated vehicle is connected to the shooting.
Detective Inspector Mark Hatt confirmed that the early stages of the investigation suggest the victim was “specifically targeted,” adding, “We believe this was not a random act. The circumstances suggest a deliberate attack.”
No arrests have been made, and police are appealing for anyone who may have CCTV or dashcam footage in the area between 8:30am and 9:30am to come forward.
Residents of Wollert, a growing suburb known for its family-friendly developments and multicultural population, have expressed fear and dismay. “This kind of violence doesn’t usually happen here,” said neighbor Amina Yusuf, who lives just two streets away. “It’s unsettling to know someone was killed so close to home.”
Local leaders have echoed concerns. Councillor Matthew Leone urged calm but called for increased patrols. “We need to make sure the community feels safe while police do their job. This is not who we are as a suburb.”
While police have confirmed the victim had prior interactions with law enforcement, they emphasized that all angles are being explored. Gang or criminal affiliations, if any, have not been publicly disclosed.
This latest incident adds to growing concerns over targeted violence in Melbourne’s outer suburbs, an issue that continues to put pressure on law enforcement and community outreach efforts.
