Cole “CJ” Maston of Cottonwood Falls, A Theatre Actor Passes Away at 68

Cole “CJ” Maston, 68, of Cottonwood Falls, Kansas, passed away peacefully on July 7, 2025, at Newman Regional Health in Emporia, Kansas, following a brief illness.

Born on November 18, 1956, in Emporia, Cole James Maston was the son of Everett and Janice Maston. He grew up on his family’s farm just outside Cottonwood Falls, where he learned early the value of hard work, humility, and connection to the land. A graduate of Chase County High School, Class of 1974, Cole went on to study Agricultural Science at Hutchinson Community College, preparing for a life in farming that honored his family’s multi-generational legacy.

For over four decades, Cole managed the Maston Family Farm with dedication, balancing tradition with innovation. He was a respected voice in Kansas agriculture, known for his thoughtful approach to land stewardship and mentorship to younger farmers in the region. Cole believed that farming was not just a profession, but a responsibility—one that extended beyond the soil to his community.

Later in life, Cole discovered another passion that surprised many and delighted all who knew him—acting. What began as a lighthearted invitation from a friend turned into a cherished creative outlet. Cole became a regular on local stages, performing with the Cottonwood Community Playhouse and the Emporia Arts Council. Whether taking on comedic roles or more serious parts, he brought a quiet depth and sincerity that resonated with audiences. For Cole, the theatre was not just about performance—it was about connection, storytelling, and being fully present in the moment.

Cole was a man of few words but deep conviction. He approached life with steadiness and grace, and he made space for others to be seen and heard. He loved restoring old farm equipment, reading American history, and watching his grandchildren grow. Those closest to him will remember his dry wit, steady hands, and generous heart.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Laura Maston; their three children, Emily Simms (Derrick) of Topeka, Ryan Maston of Cottonwood Falls, and Aaron Maston of Lawrence; and five grandchildren: Olivia, Ethan, Juniper, Mae, and Nolan. He is also survived by his sister, Debra Horton (Stanley) of Wichita; two nieces; and a wide circle of extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Everett and Janice Maston, and his brother, Samuel Maston.

A visitation will be held on Friday, July 12, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Brown-Bennett-Alexander Funeral Home, Cottonwood Falls. A memorial service will follow on Saturday, July 13 at 11:00 a.m. at First United Methodist Church of Cottonwood Falls, officiated by Reverend Linda Carlson. Burial will take place at Prairie Grove Cemetery, and the service will be livestreamed via the church website for those unable to attend in person.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Emporia Arts Council or the Kansas 4-H Foundation, in honor of Cole’s lifelong support for the arts and youth in agriculture.

The Maston family wishes to express their gratitude to the medical staff at Newman Regional Health for their attentive care, and to the many friends and neighbors who have offered support during this time of loss.

Cole Maston lived a life rooted in hard work, humility, and quiet strength. His presence will be deeply missed, but his influence—on the land he tended, the stories he told, and the lives he touched—will endure for years to come.
