Sheinelle Jones will soon be back on the Today show for the first time since the heartbreaking loss of her husband, Uche Ojeh.
Ojeh, who had been married to Jones for 18 years, died earlier this year after being diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. His passing was announced during the May 23 broadcast of the NBC morning show, with Jones’ co-hosts sharing the difficult news with viewers.
After several months away from the spotlight, Jones, 47, will rejoin her colleagues on Friday, September 5. Savannah Guthrie told viewers on Tuesday that Jones’ return will include a deeply personal pre-taped conversation between the two, marking her first public reflections since her husband’s death.
“We sat down together and talked about how she’s found the strength to keep moving forward during these past few months,” Guthrie explained. “She calls this chapter a ‘beautiful nightmare.’ She shares powerful insights on grief, hope, and resilience that we can’t wait for everyone to hear.”
Craig Melvin described the return as “great news for our Today family,” while Guthrie emphasized the warmth and strength Jones has shown despite unimaginable loss. Dylan Dreyer, her co-host on the third hour of Today, added that Jones has long been a source of joy and positivity in the newsroom. “She’s always smiling, always a bright light. Even through this, she’s leaned on her faith and her loved ones.”
Jones first hinted at her family’s challenges in January, telling fans on Instagram she was stepping back from work to address a “family health matter.” She thanked her Today colleagues and viewers for their kindness during her absence but kept details private until Ojeh’s death was shared publicly in May.
In the weeks that followed, many of her co-hosts attended Ojeh’s funeral and continued to surround Jones with support. “We’ve been praying for her and waiting for this day,” Dreyer previously told Entertainment Tonight.
For Jones, her return to Studio 1A represents both a professional homecoming and a step forward in her healing journey. As she prepares to share her story with viewers, her message of hope is expected to resonate with anyone navigating grief and loss.
