A York County woman has died following a late-night multi-vehicle collision in Lancaster County that involved emergency responders, according to authorities.
The Lancaster County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Heather Bare, 48, of York New Salem. She was pronounced dead Saturday, Feb. 21, in the emergency department at Penn Medicine Lancaster General Hospital.
According to Pennsylvania State Police, troopers were alerted around 10:37 p.m. to a crash on Route 283 in East Hempfield Township. A preliminary investigation found that a Mercedes sedan was traveling the wrong way in the eastbound lanes when it struck an EMS vehicle before continuing and colliding head-on with a state police unit.
Emergency crews extricated those involved and provided aid at the scene. The occupants of the police vehicle were transported to the hospital in stable condition. Bare, who was the sole occupant of the sedan, was taken in critical condition and later died.
Authorities say the crash remains under investigation. Fatal wrong-way crashes, while relatively rare, often result in severe outcomes, underscoring ongoing roadway safety concerns across Pennsylvania.
