BATAVIA, Illinois — Family, friends, classmates, and neighbors are mourning the heartbreaking loss of Kathryn “Kate” Schmidt, a 10-year-old from Batavia whose life was tragically cut short in the devastating boating accident on Lake Geneva over the Fourth of July holiday weekend.
Kate was among three children who died after a boat carrying multiple passengers capsized during a sudden, powerful storm on July 3. Also killed were her cousins, 6-year-old Caleb Oswald and 7-year-old Abigail Oswald, whose deaths have left families and communities across northern Illinois and southeastern Wisconsin grieving an unimaginable loss.
As loved ones continue to mourn, Kate is being remembered not only for the tragedy that claimed her life, but for the extraordinary kindness, compassion, and joy she shared during her ten years.
A Bright Light Remembered
In a heartfelt statement released by her family, Kate was described as “an amazing girl with a bubbly personality” whose warmth and generosity touched everyone she met.
“Whether you met her once or knew her well, she would brighten your life any time of day,” her family wrote. “Her kindness and joy touched everyone she met, and our family will miss her deeply.”
Those who knew Kate say she embraced life with enthusiasm. She loved spending time with family and friends, playing tennis and softball, painting, caring for animals, and making memories both on and off the court. Her infectious smile and welcoming personality left a lasting impression on classmates, coaches, teachers, and neighbors alike.
A Student, Athlete, Artist, and Friend
Kate attended Grace McWayne Elementary School in Batavia, where she excelled academically and actively participated in school activities.
She was a gifted young athlete with a particular passion for tennis, training at Five Star Tennis in Plainfield, Vaughan Tennis Club in Aurora, and Hendricks Elite Academy in Lockport. Family members said her commitment to the sport, combined with her positive attitude and determination, distinguished her from an early age.
Beyond athletics, Kate enjoyed singing with her school choir and expressing her creativity through painting. Her obituary describes a child whose generosity matched her talents.
“In her ten short years, Kate filled the lives of everyone who knew her with love, laughter, and endless joy,” her obituary reads. “She possessed a beautiful combination of elegance, determination, and a bright, bubbly personality that made friends wherever she went.”
Her family added that she will be remembered not simply for her accomplishments, but for her compassion, generosity, and ability to make everyone feel welcomed and valued.
The Lake Geneva Boating Tragedy
The fatal accident occurred when a boat carrying ten people encountered a sudden and severe storm on Lake Geneva, causing the vessel to capsize and sink.
Emergency responders rescued six adults and one child from the water. Tragically, Kate and her cousins, Caleb and Abigail Oswald, remained trapped with the submerged vessel despite all three children wearing properly fitted life jackets, according to authorities.
Preliminary findings from medical officials indicate the children’s deaths were consistent with freshwater drowning, and investigators reported no significant external injuries.
Officials have stated that those aboard the boat were residents of Batavia, Wheaton, and Fontana, Wisconsin. Authorities continue to review the circumstances surrounding the incident.
A Legacy of Kindness
Rather than requesting flowers or traditional memorial gifts, the Schmidt family has established a charitable fundraising initiative designed to reflect Kate’s generous spirit.
According to the family, donations will help provide opportunities for children who otherwise could not afford to participate in sports such as tennis and softball while also supporting children interested in adopting animals—two causes that closely reflected Kate’s passions.
“The funds raised will help children in need who can’t afford sports like tennis or softball, or who wish to adopt animals,” the family shared. “This is something that will keep her memory shining in our lives and in the lives of others, carrying forward the love and generosity she always showed.”
The family emphasized that the fundraiser is intended to transform profound personal grief into opportunities that will benefit other children for years to come.
Remembering Caleb and Abigail Oswald
Kate’s cousins, Caleb and Abigail Oswald, were also remembered in an emotional tribute released by their family.
“Caleb and Abigail were more than brother and sister—they were best friends,” their family wrote. “They filled our home with laughter, music, hugs, and endless love.”
Like the Schmidt family, the Oswald family has chosen to honor their children’s memories through charitable giving, expressing hope that acts of kindness will become their lasting legacy.
Gratitude for First Responders
In their public statement, the Schmidt family also expressed heartfelt appreciation to the Lake Geneva Police Department, neighboring public safety agencies, and the many first responders who assisted during the emergency and supported families throughout the tragedy.
“Our family has been overwhelmed by the compassion shown by first responders and our community,” the family said, thanking those who organized meal trains, offered prayers, and extended countless acts of kindness during an incredibly difficult time.
Honoring Kate’s Memory
Although Kathryn “Kate” Schmidt’s life ended far too soon, those who loved her say her influence will continue through the countless lives she touched.
She is remembered as a devoted daughter, loving sister, cherished granddaughter, loyal friend, talented young athlete, gifted artist, and compassionate child whose generosity reached far beyond her years.
As Batavia and the surrounding communities continue to grieve, Kate’s family hopes that every opportunity created through her memorial fund will serve as a lasting reminder of the joy, kindness, and hope she brought into the world.
Her legacy, they say, will live on not only in treasured memories but also in every child given the chance to pursue a dream because of her enduring spirit.
