Death on Carnival Cruise from Galveston: Euvelester Villarreal Jr, 48, Resident of Rio Grande City, Identified as Victim – FBI Investigating

South Texas Man Dies Aboard Carnival Dream Cruise; FBI, Medical Examiner Investigating

Galveston, Texas — Authorities have confirmed the identity of a South Texas man who died aboard the Carnival Dream cruise ship last week. The deceased, 48-year-old Euvelester Villarreal Jr., was a resident of Rio Grande City, the largest municipality in rural Starr County, nestled in the Rio Grande Valley.

Villarreal passed away in the early morning hours of Wednesday, July 23, while the ship was en route on a six-day voyage through the Western Caribbean, having departed from Galveston, Texas just days earlier. His time of death was officially recorded as 5:22 a.m., according to John Fernandez, a medicolegal death investigator with the Galveston County Medical Examiner’s Office.

In keeping with standard maritime protocols, Villarreal’s body was secured in the cruise ship’s onboard morgue until the vessel returned to Galveston, where local officials could take custody.

An autopsy was performed on Monday, July 28, but as of now, the cause of death remains undetermined. “There were no visible signs of trauma or injury,” Fernandez noted. “We’re awaiting toxicology and additional test results to help us draw any further conclusions.”

Carnival Cruise Line notified federal authorities shortly after Villarreal’s death, prompting an inquiry led by the FBI, in coordination with the U.S. Coast Guard, Customs and Border Protection, and the cruise line itself.

“The investigation is ongoing,” said Connor Hagan, spokesperson for the FBI’s Houston field office. “At this stage, we are unable to release further details.” The agency emphasized that such inquiries are standard when a death occurs aboard a U.S.-bound or U.S.-registered vessel involving American citizens.

Though official sources have not indicated any signs of foul play, the circumstances surrounding Villarreal’s passing have stirred speculation among fellow passengers and social media users. Several travelers recounted hearing emergency sirens and crew pages for medical personnel around the time of the incident.

Amanda Meadows, a content creator and comedian who was on the same cruise, described being awakened by alarms in the night, followed by an announcement requesting medical staff to report to the Serenity Deck, an adults-only area of the ship. She said she later overheard a crew member mention a fatal incident near the ship’s casino area.

However, Carnival Cruise Line has publicly stated that Villarreal’s death is not considered suspicious. The company has not yet responded to requests for further comment.

The Carnival Dream had departed Galveston on Sunday, July 20, with scheduled stops along the Mexican coastline near Belize and Costa Maya. Following the incident, online forums and some passengers noted disruptions and speculation, though cruise activities continued for the remainder of the trip.

As of this week, bookings for the Dream’s Western Caribbean itinerary have been marked as unavailable on Carnival’s website, though it’s unclear if that’s related to the ongoing investigation.

For now, Villarreal’s family and the South Texas community await answers as officials continue working to determine what led to his sudden and unexpected passing.
